According to the UN report, the security situation will also be one of the themes of Plasschaert’s speech, as ISIS continued to launch attacks, mainly in the governorates of Anbar, Baghdad, Diyala, Kirkuk, Nineveh, and Salah al-Din, while the Iraqi security forces continued to confront terrorist operations.

The report pointed out that the number of attacks attributed to ISIS during the first quarter of 2023 (92 attacks, compared to 188 attacks during the first quarter of 2022), which is the lowest quarterly number since Iraq declared its victory over ISIS in December 2017, which It highlights an overall decrease in attacks.

It is also expected that Blaskhart will address the harmful effects of climate change on Iraq, which is considered one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to be affected by climate, and suffers from increasing water scarcity as a result of desertification, salinity, and disputes over water management with neighboring countries, which caused a decrease in the water level in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

In addition, Blaskhart will address, in her press briefing before the Security Council, human rights issues and the humanitarian situation in Iraq.

A representative of Iraqi civil society will participate in the session, where she will talk about issues focusing on women, peace and security. According to the report, she will call for achieving justice in the participation of women in political life, and the importance of passing the Violence Against Women Law.

In addition, Plasschaert will raise the issue of regional influences on Iraq.

It is expected that the members of the Security Council will commend the progress made by the Iraqi authorities in implementing their governmental programs, including the agreement on the budget, setting the date for the provincial elections, and the interim agreement between Baghdad and Erbil on the sharing of oil revenues.

They would also welcome success in operations against ISIS and the strengthening of security stability, while emphasizing the importance of dealing with the root causes of extremism.

International Monetary Expects Annual Inflation In Iraq To Rise To 6.6%

He added, “It is also expected that the annual inflation in Iraq will decrease during the year 2024 to 1.6%,” noting that “the annual inflation in Iraq during the year 2020 amounted to 0.6%, to rise in 2021 to 6%.”

He pointed out that “the largest annual inflation rate recorded for the Arab countries during the year 2022 was in Algeria, where inflation reached 9.3%, followed by Egypt at 8.5%, while Saudi Arabia recorded the lowest annual inflation rate for the same year among the Arab countries at 2.5%.”

UN Blaskhart: The Iraqi Government Has Taken Clear Positions Against Corruption

A statement by the Parliament’s Media Department stated, “The Finance Committee held, chaired by the Chairman of the Committee, Atwan Al-Atwani, and in the presence of its members, a meeting that continued late on Wednesday evening, regarding putting the final touches to the Federal General Budget Law for the fiscal years 2023-2024-2025, in preparation for submitting it to the Presidency of the House of Representatives to include it within Council agenda.

Al-Atwani stressed, during the meeting, that “the committee has reached the final stages of resolving the general budget law,” pointing to “the need to support strategic projects and follow development paths, and provide the necessary resources to develop priority sectors, improve public services and infrastructure, and contribute to the investment of natural resources; in order to achieve The financial and economic stability of the state, in accordance with the implementation of the government program.

The statement added, “The committee held extensive discussions regarding the mechanism for determining the need for spending units from financial allocations for the possibility of making transfers, ensuring exchange priorities, and maximizing non-oil revenues, as well as emphasizing the involvement of the private sector, to contribute to improving production and continuity of projects.”
