Newsweek newspaper revealed, on Monday, that the US Department of Defense, “the Pentagon”, has formed a secret army of 60,000 personnel, who carry out their duties under military, civil, economic and advisory names.
The American newspaper reported that the Pentagon has formed over the past ten years “the largest secret force the world has ever seen. Many of its personnel work under false identities and in complete secrecy, as they are all part of the signature reduction program.”
She explained that these forces, which “are more than 10 times superior in the scope of the secret elements of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), carry out internal and external missions in military uniform or civilian cover and in real life or on the Internet, sometimes hiding in private business and consulting companies, including a group with names registered in Inside”.
The newspaper indicated that it reached these conclusions regarding the existence of this “secret army” as a result of an investigation that lasted for about two years, which included analyzing documents, including open ones, and interviews with servants in these forces and people familiar with their activities, but no official confirmation of this information was obtained.
It indicated that about half of these 60,000 members are members of combat units that carry out covert operations in various parts of the world, and others are intelligence and counter intelligence experts who also work often under cover outside the United States, and there is a third division formed by groups specializing in electronic and combat operations. Cyber attacks often operate on US soil.
The newspaper said that the Pentagon is working to develop its secret units to reduce interest in its operations in the international arena, noting that the activities of these secret forces annually cost about $ 900 million, and their work is covered up by about 130 companies.
She pointed out that the true scope of the operations of this “secret army” of the Pentagon, which was never subjected to examination by Congress, is still unknown, which means that the numbers may be much higher.
